A weekend in Durango runs at the pace you set. Here is how we would spend two days, starting at the shop and ending in the high country.
Day one, on Main Avenue
Start on Main Avenue. The historic blocks of downtown run straight through the center of town, lined with brick storefronts that have stood for generations. The 1000 block is where you will find us, at number 1019. Come in, try a hat on, and let us point you on from there.
The street rewards an unhurried pace. A few landmarks worth orienting around:
- The Strater Hotel, anchoring the south end of the street
- The Durango and Silverton depot, where the historic narrow-gauge line still runs up into the mountains
- The 1000 block of Main Avenue, where the shop sits at 1019
Day two, in the high country
Step off Main and the San Juan Mountains hold the whole town in view. The light comes down off the peaks in the morning, and the air stays cool well into summer. It is the kind of place that asks you to look up more than once.
Wear the boots you came home with rather than the ones you packed to keep clean. Durango is built for both the street and the trail.
Spend the weekend slow. That is how the town asks to be seen.
